Protests erupt outside Kasba Police station as 3 arrested in alleged Kolkata college gang rape
The summer session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly is expected to begin on June 9, according to Speaker Biman Banerjee, who announced the tentative date on Thursday. The session may continue for two to two and a half weeks, during which the state government plans to introduce multiple bills. One of these includes a bill that had previously been sent to the Governor and is expected to return for discussion.
The Speaker also stated that a proposal will be brought in the House to honour Indian soldiers, specifically in the context of the India-Pakistan conflict, where several soldiers lost their lives. Banerjee said, “A proposal will be brought to pay tribute to the soldiers who died and to thank those who risked their lives for the country.” The motion is expected to acknowledge both the martyrs and those actively serving on the frontlines.
In addition to this motion, the state government is preparing to table several new legislative bills. These bills will cover various state governance matters, though specific details about their content have not been officially disclosed. All bills introduced will be subject to detailed discussions during the session, as confirmed by Assembly sources.
The upcoming session follows a previously heated budget session that saw multiple protests by the opposition. During that session, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari was suspended for 30 days after tearing official documents. On March 11, BJP legislators also protested by tearing up the Assembly’s proceedings in response to a decision made by the Speaker. The summer session is expected to proceed with a full legislative agenda.
